DEAD END RUN
Dead End Drive - 2003 - Color - Anamorphic Widescreen - Trailers

Cult filmmaker Sogo Ishii's follow-up to his spectacular "Electric Dragon 80,000 V"
consists of three short films. Continuing on the road he had taken, Ishii throws
every trick in the book at us; rapid cuts, bouncing cameras, fast close-ups, wacky
angles, vibrating zooms, and quick dissolves turn out a triumphant display of
knockout visuals. All three stories deal with a "running man" who ends up in a
dead-end alley. In the first part, a man is pursued by a woman who turns out to be
"more than human." Part two stars Masatoshi Nagase ("Electric Dragon 80,000 V,"
"Party 7") as the man who is driven into the dead-end alley by a hitman. In part
three, Tadanobu Asano (also from "Electric Dragon 80,000 V," "Party 7") is chased
by the police, and ends up on a rooftop where he kidnaps a woman who was
there to commit suicide. As usual, Ishii's technique combines breathless action
scenes with the hard-edged feel of the experimental film.

stopping for all red lights. Later, the three would be robbers – Arai (Susumu
Terajima), Nishi (Ren Osugi), and Kodama (Masanobu Ando) – along with
Asakura, who is still suffering from his headache — commiserate over drinks.

Allegedly based on a number of true cases, The Guys From Paradise is a prison
story set in the Phillipines against a background of corruption, drug trafficking and
paedophilia. This being a Takashi Miike film however, the results are far from
conventional. It's essentially a film of two parts: the first set in a prison named
"Paradise" where a small community of Japanese prisoners led by veteran
criminal Yoshida (Tsutomu Yamazaki) enjoy a life of relative freedom and
privilege, the second the story of their exploits outside prison walls with police
and a deranged yakuza on their trail.

SEBURI STORY, THE
Seburi Monogatari - 1985 - Color - Widescreen

The culturally isolated, nomadic Seburi people of western Japan are the subject of this tragedy about a few of the community's members who especially experience difficulties as modern Japan encroaches on their world. The setting is World War II, and conflicts have already arisen when the military police come to take Seburi men away into the army. Still following their own customs that can be harsh at times, and are particularly cruel to women (women must give birth alone and unaided, a woman's adultery is punished by burying her up to her neck in the earth and then leaving her for days), the Seburi are mainly treated with fear and animosity by the non-Seburi townspeople of the region. Along with the hardships arising from cultural clashes, nature's own vagaries present other challenges to the Seburi -- who still lived in tents until the 1950s. Winter avalanches and snowstorms cause as much havoc as the tensions engendered by the slow encroachment of the modern world.

TENNEN SHOUJO MAHN NEXT
aka "Natural Girl Mahn Next" - 1999 - Color - Widescreen - DVD Extras

Takashi Miike, the man who can make anything into something...different.
Something bizarre. And something well worth watching. Take one manga about
schoolgirls trying to avoid becoming models by day, vampires by night. Multiply
with kung fu and Kogal attitude...these girls talk and fight with equal frequency.
Divide by one bizarre sense of humor and add in a bunch of cute TV star girls and
boys and then multiply to the power of Miike and out pops Tennen shoujo Mahn
Next: Yokohama Yayu-hen. A two part television program-this gives you a season
worth of American TV's twists and turns in 160 minutes. Mahn and Riona love to
fight, it certainly brings them together, and a little group of girls go about their
usual business as we meet them. Talking boys, old guys who buy them stuff,
virginity and the lack thereof and all that other good stuff - this is about to go on
the back burner as their number is reduced by the appearance of Yuya, an
idol-esque male who oozes that non-sexuality that seems to be so popular in
Japanese poppers. He has fangs...and if you want to be a model at The Saint
Model Agency, the price is a bit higher than just taking up smoking and vomiting.
Well, there is some of the old expulsory behavior, but it's more disturbing as it
looks much more like stomach lining than actual food. As the girls realize only
virgins can fall to the tastes of a bloodsucker...well, much goofy chat occurs. It all
comes to a head as old friendships die while others blossom into something
else, girls battle and love sprouts between Vampire boys and schoolgirls. Damn
that love! God appears (yep) and he is a vampire...a Saint Vampire to boot.
