Directed by acclaimed director Ryuhei Kitamura of "Versus" and "Azumi," this
sci-fi action thriller combines the claustrophobic tension of Vincenzo Natali's
"Cube" with the over-the-top kinetics of Kitamura's own "Versus." Sentenced to
death for brutally murdering his girlfriend's rapists, Tenshu is sentenced to die in
the electric chair. However, when the time comes, he's given two choices; either
the execution to be carried out, or choose life without freedom. He chooses the
latter, and the next thing he knows, he finds himself in a sealed room with
another convict, and the wild nightmarish ride begins. The film is based on a
popular comic book by Tsutomu Takahashi who also created Sky High, the
manga series on which Kitamura's next movie is based.

The title of the movie is a direct reference to the French suburbs (banlieues) and
specifically the northern suburbs of Paris, the infamous neuf-trois (93) and “92?
area. These suburbs also starred in the strongly political masterpiece La Haine
(this movie is steadily becoming my Leitmotiv, haha) and are symbolic for all the
tension that is connected with immigrants and angry youth. The story takes place
in the very near future of the year 2013 and depicts a grim picture where these
suburbs – fittingly called Banlieue 13 – have become an outlawed enclave,
sealed off from the rest of civilisation by a big wall. Within this wall it’s a free
haven for criminals and those cast aside by society. Here we find Leïto (Belle),
who rages a one-man war against the ruling drug lords. After he is betrayed by
the corrupt police and his sister is taken hostage by the criminals, he teams up
with super cop Damien to retrieve a nuclear bomb which has been stolen by the
main drug lord. They have little time to disarm the bomb and liberate Leïto’s

Few Japanese films in recent memory have caused such controversy and
commotion as Battle Royale. Directed by the late great Kinji Fukasaku, the
brilliant heart-stopping thriller portrayed a junior high school class lucky enough
to be chosen and taken to an island where the 42 students are forced to kill one
another until the last boy or girl is left standing. Based on the novel by Koshun
Takami, Fukasaku worked on the script with his son Kenta. Now comes the
much anticipated sequel, Battle Royale II, based on an original story by the
Fukasakus. Like James Cameron's 'Aliens,' its tagline reads "This time it's war"
...And it is! It's been a few years since Shuya and Noriko survived their BR
bloodbath. They're now known as the head of a terrorist group known as the Wild
Seven who blew up a series of skyscrapers. This time, the government decides
to send the latest bunch of BR candidates to eliminate them. The group includes
Shiori Kitano, the daughter of Kitano (Takeshi 'Beat' Kitano), the teacher and the
director of the BR program who was killed by Shuya and Noriko. The group has
only three days to finish the job, and again, they must wear dog collars that
explode. This time round however, the same numbered students are connected
through the collars, and if one dies, the other's dog collar explodes. With even
bigger actions than the first movie, BRII racks up a body count that would make
Freddy and Jason envious!
